Da Einstein den zweiten Teil seines Lebens in Amerika gelebt hat, dachte ich, es wäre sinnvoll das Buch auf Deutsch zu lesen. Jetzt wo ich mehr über Einstein weiß, hätte ich es doch auf Deutsch gelesen. Der wichtigste Teil seiner wissenschaftlichen Karriere hat eben noch im deutschsprachigen Raum stattgefunden. Viele Briefe im Buch waren wohl original in Deutsch gewesen, sodass man hier lediglich die Übersetzung bekommen hat. Das ist allerdings nicht der Fehler des Buchs, sondern meiner.Ansonsten ist das Buch sehr interessant geschrieben. Es ist weder zu lang, noch zu kurz. Die Balance zwischen Persönlichem und Wissenschaftlichem ist gut gelungen, nach meinem Geschmack kommt der wissenschaftliche Teil etwas zu kurz und der persönliche ist stellenweise ein wenig ermüdend.
I have never been good at math nor physics. Still, I highly recommend this book because it manages to present a perfect blend of the biographical, theoretical, and historical aspects of Einstein's life. Isaacson seems genuinely committed to making relativity and the related discussions (e.g. quantum physics, quantum mechanics, string theory) understandable to the layperson without watering down the content of his book. Einstein's personal life is described in detail, as is his friendship (and sometimes rivalry) with the noted physisists of his time.It is, however, no light reading. I often found I had to re-read passages to grasp physics-content, and - admittedly - some still went over my head. Passages full of theoretical physics and mathematics are often interspersed with quotes from letters between Einstein and his friends, or anecdotes from his personal life, or discussion of the implication of his and others' findings on the universe, so that the reader has no occasion to get bored. The focus is always Einstein but the book gives the wider context necessary to fully grasp the impact Einstein had on our understanding of the world.
